So, I'm not a baker, but I'd secretly like to be. So this weekend I tried my hand a meyer lemon loaf. Actually, I made, 3 mini loaves instead of the 2 giant one the recipe calls for.
Lets start by...This all started awhile ago when I found the recipe & had been hoping to make it, or something(orange maybe) like it. So I bought loaf pans & a sifter last weekend...We'll talk about this "sifter" a little later.
Then, this week, while at Fresh Market(this place is awesome!) on my lunch break I saw that they had them. They come from California & aren't like regular lemons. They are the size of a lime or larger & the skin is real soft and they are a tinge of orange in color. Needless to say, I bought them this weekend because I knew what I could make. So 6 of them cost me $2.99/lb & somehow mine cost exactly $2.99. Then the recipe called for rum, I don't have any, so I bought of of those shot sized ones for a buck at the liquor store, oh & get this, it was the first time I didn't get carded, bad sign, must be getting old.
So today, I get the rest of the ingredients & I had to buy a batter bowl for easy pouring and I got one of those weird squeezer thingies & its a good thing they had directions in pictures cause you put the thing in the opposite of what I thought & the rest of the package was all in spanish(got at Ross for $4.99).
So now we're making these loaves. I went through about a whole package of clorox wipes preparing my station and I would say a ROLL of papertowels & a dishwasher full of dishes. Man i'm a disaster when it comes to making stuff. I just keep pulling out new spoons, measuring cups, bowls..just a ton of crap, lets put it that way.
Then I gotta sift the flour & by the way there is no such thing as cake flour, what is that anyway? Well I'll tell you what, I sifted before in HomeEc and I got news, it didn't work like this new piece of crap, it worked a thousand times better! It took like 10 dang minutes to sift this crap together & my hand was killing me. I would have been better off pushing it through a strainer.
So I get the thing finally in the pan & in the oven. Then I see the melted butter on the counter, I never put it in!!!!!!!!!! Ha, to the rescue, pull it out of the oven & have to pur it out of the pan into the batter bowl & then re-butter and re-flour the pan & put the new batter, Butter added, back into the pan & back in the oven...OK nightmare over.
So now its sitting on its cooling rack(which are old as dirt & look a little rusty, ha) with its meyer lemon syrup on top.
These stinking things better be good or I just spend $40 on all this crap for 3 little cakes for nothing.....I'm no baker. I'll let you know how they turn out.
